On the road again and again with Take Five: Europe
Martel Ollerenshaw provides a running commentary of the activities taking place in various European cities this spring/summer.
Since April it’s been a busy time for Take Five: Europe – we’ve been selecting artists for Edition II, speaking about the project at international jazz symposia and the Take Five: Europe Roadshow aka Take Five: Europe Live! has been in Coutances (Jazz sous les Pommiers), Rotterdam (North Sea Jazz Festival) and Molde (Molde International Jazz Festival).
In April, Take Five: Europe activity was focussed around Jazzahead - the gathering in Bremen of the international jazz community (www.jazzahead.de). While in Bremen, the Take Five: Europe Edition II participants were selected by a panel of international festival programmers and the information about these 10 artists can be found on this site under Artists, 2012. We are having such a good experience with the artists in Edition I, who are a great bunch of people in addition to being such talented musicians so we very much looking forward to seeing how Edition II will unfold.
While at Jazzahead, John Cumming and I were joined by Tom Arthurs (UK) and Oene van Geel (Netherlands) to speak about Take Five and Take Five: Europe in a session on Best Practice: Coaching. This session was chaired by Alex Webb (Lecturer in Music & Event Management at Bucks New University) and attended by a range of music industry personnel with an interest in the professional development of artists.
John and I also spoke about Take Five and Take Five: Europe in Rotterdam at Jazzdag – the Dutch Jazz Meeting (www.jazzdag.nl). This time we were joined by Bram Stadhouders (Netherlands) and Jules Buckley – the British conductor, composer and orchestrator who participated in Take Five: UK Edition III and who is well known to Dutch audiences via his work with the Metropole Orkest, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and a host of other Dutch ensembles.
Take Five: Europe Live! is the 10 piece ensemble that is the result of music workshops during the Take Five: Europe residency in Bore Place in February. The ensemble – which plays original material from each participant - has been impressing audiences in the Magic Mirrors (Spiegel Tent) at Jazz sous les Pommiers in Coutances (19 May), at the Ahoy Theatre at North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (8 July) and at the Kulturhuset at the Molde International Jazz Festival in Norway (19 July) – an image of the band on stage in Molde is attached.
Take Five: Europe Live! has a little break before it performs again in the autumn at London Jazz Festival (17 November) and Jazztopad in Wroclaw (24 November).
